Northumbria University has been awarded University of the Year 2022 at the renowned Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.
This monumental win celebrates a special journey Northumbria University has been on since 2008, which involved becoming the first research-intensive modern university in the UK.
Along the way, the university has achieved key milestones including from the Research Excellence Framework (REF), which is a measure of the quality and strength of research in UK universities. In 2021 Northumbria University had the biggest rise in research power of any UK university, moving up 27 spaces to 23rd after having moved up to 50th in 2014 from 80th in 2008.
As well as prioritising research in education, the university wanted to continue supporting student diversity and social mobility while advancing the local economy.
Professor Andy Long, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Northumbria University explains that the THE award highlights how “…the education we give our students is enriched by research.
I genuinely believe what sets us apart from others is that 40% of these students are from traditionally low-participation backgrounds. Along with all our students, they learn from researchers and academics, participate in research and co-create knowledge.
…Northumbria has undergone an extraordinary transition. The dedication of everyone at the University has made this possible, and it is thanks to them that we can now celebrate this phenomenal success.”
Adding to this, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Chancellor of Northumbria University said: “When I was invited to become Chancellor at Northumbria there were two things that stood out. The first was the people, who are extraordinary, and the second was the level of ambition. It wasn’t about being a bit better, it was about being the absolute best they could be. Winning the THE University of the Year award recognises these qualities for all to see.”
“When I wanted to come to the UK, I searched for five to six universities and Northumbria University was the best I found because of the reputation, it’s recognised worldwide. When I was searching for this University the staff helped me a lot. I met delegates from the University, they were so helpful. The consulting team came and they told me everything about the University and it was amazing.”
