Newcastle is a compact city, which means that it’s large enough to ensure that there’s always something to do, but equally small enough to help you feel like part of the community. There are over 45,000 students in the city, that’s one in every six people in Newcastle. So it’s no surprise that it’s been voted the best student city 5 times in the last 7 years.

If you like to shop, Newcastle has one of the UK’s largest city centre shopping complexes, Eldon Square, plus there are numerous boutiques and markets worth visiting too.

For those who would like to travel a little further afield to see more of the region, Newcastle is only an hour’s drive from Scotland, or the coastline is also nearby with some of the best surfing beaches in the north of the UK.

Places to eat

Newcastle has lots of options of places to eat, with restaurants of almost every different cuisine to sample. Many of the restaurants in Newcastle and Gateshead serve halal food, you can check a list online here.

Places of worship

At Northumbria University, we provide spiritual and pastoral support to students of all faiths and beliefs. There are also regular trips and activities organised to help you meet new friends.

On-campus, we have a Peace Room, a Quiet Room and a Muslim Prayer Facility. Speak to our Chaplains to find out how to register.

Off-campus, there are a range of places of worship for you to join – we’ve included a short list below.

Islam

As an International student, you will need to apply for a visa to come and study in the UK.

When you have met all the conditions of entry for your pathway programme at Northumbria University and provided all your pre-CAS documents (including accepting your place and payment of deposit), you will be sent a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS) number. This is an electronic record, and you will need this document to apply for a student visa to study in the UK.

There are several online resources available to students from the Middle East wishing to study in the UK:

“I chose Northumbria because of the sponsorship that the Embassy provided and my friends who highly recommended the University to me. The studying facilities are fantastic and the timetabling is great because it allows me to take advantage of my free time here, which is often filled with extra-curricular activities on campus.”
