Newcastle is a relatively compact student-friendly city – 1 in 6 residents are students and the city is regularly voted the top student city in the UK.
As such a student-focused city, there is always lots for you to do. Whether you want to go shopping, visit a gallery, make use of our excellent sporting facilities on campus, or relax in the Students’ Union. The Students’ Union has lots of different societies and clubs for you to join, you can see a full list of the current societies and clubs here.
The city also offers a great base from which to explore the North of the UK. Scotland is less than an hour away and you can get a direct train to Edinburgh from Newcastle station. Alternatively, you can even get a train to London, with fast trains taking 3 hours.
Whatever your taste, there are lots of places to eat out in Newcastle. Many of the restaurants in Newcastle and Gateshead serve halal food, you can check a list online here.
At Northumbria University, we provide spiritual and pastoral support to students of all faiths and beliefs. There are also regular trips and activities organised to help you meet new friends.
On-campus, we have a Peace Room, a Quiet Room and a Muslim Prayer Facility. Speak to our Chaplains to find out how to register.

Islam
As an International student, you will need to apply for a visa to come and study in the UK.
When you have met all the conditions of entry for your pathway programme at Northumbria University and provided all your pre-CAS documents (including accepting your place and payment of deposit), you will be sent a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS) number. This is an electronic record, and you will need this document to apply for a student visa to study in the UK.
